Kill Devil Hills, with a year-round population of approximately 7,000, is located in Dare County on Bodie Island, a former island that is now a peninsula connected north of the North Carolina-Virginia state line. Kill Devil Hills was the site of one of the largest dunes. During the colonial period, there were many shipwrecks on this dune, and several of the ships were transporting barrels of rum. The locals scavenged the ship and hid the rum which they claimed to be was strong enough to “kill the devil” behind the dunes that took their name from the rum. Kill Devil Hills is the site of Orville Wright’s first flight in a machine powered heavier than an air vehicle in 1903. The Wright Brothers National Memorial, including a park and a museum, currently marks the historic site where Wright’s Glider hovered for ten memorable minutes.
